My top 10 for 2013
It has been a very good year for us! We have had some seriously cute hairstyles to choose from for this round up. I almost was going to make it my top fifteen this year, but I sucked it up and narrowed it down to my top ten. There were a lot of really cute ones for us to choose from this year. So Scroll down to get the tutorial links to our top ten.

Double Twisted Fish Braid
Have you missed me? I haven't posted in over a week! How crazy is that? I was focused on family for Christmas. It is always a busy time of year. We did have a fantastic Christmas. Lots of cookie making and family. I love this time of year.
For this tutorial we are keeping things super simple. For those of you following us on Instagram or Facebook you know this this tutorial was shot a while

Week 17 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
Its the last week of school before Christmas break. I love this time of year and I often over-book myself between the salon and homemade crafts for the kids. So you haven't got a new tutorial in a while. I hope you can forgive me for that. I actually shot a new one this last week, but it was very dark. So I wanted to reshoot it. So starting over in January. I am also planning on sharing a few

Elfin Hair
The girls in this house have recently discovered "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings" today the younge asked for an Elfin look. I was happy to oblige.

Week 16 {#GirlyDos100daysofhair}
I think I've kind of fizzled this week. With Christmas just two weeks away the pressure is on to finish some of my crafts, creations and all my shopping. I hadn't done any of my shopping until this week and I feel like I am very behind. I know people that are done with all of there shopping weeks before Thanksgiving... I am not one of those people.

Braided Ribbon Treasure
I'm going through some of my older files from the first of the year and I came across this simple style that had no edits done on it. (My watermark.) So I looked into it and apparently I never published this little gem! I wonder how many other flighty moments I had where I totally shot a style, but didn't get it posted. I guess its better late than never.
I found this clear back in January of

Week 15 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
I love this time of year almost more than any other time of year. I am betting I've said that before, because I have things I love about every season. But this time of year is especially happy and cheerful. I love having our Christmas tree up also.
This week you didn't get a new hairstyle from us and I am sorry about that. I have been getting all my supplies together because I was changing

Finally a Fishtail Braid that DOESN'T Sag
A few weeks back I was experimenting with an idea I had using the fishtail braid. It didn't work out, but in the process I came up with this super tight non sagging fishtail braid! It is seriously so perfect it should be outlawed! Whenever you start talking about the fishtail braid people will always complain about the same things, it looks too loose or it looks to saggy. So this is what we

Week 14 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
Super short week for us. Only two days. I can't help but look at a week like this and think that its a bit of a wash. Oh-well. At least the kids are having a good day at school and I get to have them EXTRA time this week. I love long weekends with my little ones. Nothing is better in the whole world.
Day 62-- If enough of you would like a tutorial on this one I can put one together, but I

Week 13 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
Seriously what a good hair week we had. I love when a week works out this pretty. We are now on the downward slop of our 100 day of hair. This has been very different from last year. We have had so many different styles. I think we used a lot of the same ones last year. Its been fun to watch. Which one is your favorite from this week? (See tutorial links below.)

Week 12 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
This week we had some fun hairstyles. Beans looked super cute this week. And it started out sunny and warm and it is ending snowy and cold. Its time to shift into styles that can hold up well to the weather. What are some of your favorite wet weather hairstyles? We tend to either have it in braids or straight down. And curls are avoided on rainy days.

Knotty Hairstyle
How knotty can you get with a style? This knotty! This is such a pretty style that is made up of knots and braids. Are you wanting to do this style? Well we made a video for you to hopefully be able to use this style for yourself.
Hopefully this video makes sense and works for you. About half way through the video someone pulled up across the road in front of our house and turned there radio

Week 11 {#girlydos100daysofhair}
This week we hit the half way point in our 100 days of hair! Can you believe we are almost half way done. Crazy. This was also apparently the week of braids for me. I had a braid in every hairstyle this week. I didn't realize it though until I bunched them all together on this post. Apparently I was in the mood for braids.
Day 47-- I just did a braid in the top fringe area and pulled her

Fun Braiding Ideas
Today I thought we'd have a fun round-up post of a few of our older styles that are so much more than just a regular braid. If you are ever bored of just the standard braid I highly suggest any one of these eight styles to get you out of your hair boredom funk.
Number one is a Ladder Braid. This one is a little challenging, but its worth practicing and using. It looks great! The second one is

Week 10 {#girlydos100daysofhair}
The week of Halloween marked the end of a term for our school, so we took Friday off in our district. Or so they say. I kind of think they didn't want the kids back to school on a sugar high today. LOL. I totally don't blame the teachers for that one bit.
We had a great Halloween, but there was one slight downer. The salon I have been working at for over the past year announced they would be

Halloween {My Favorite}
Halloween is my favorite holiday. The kids totally know it too, I start hearing about what costumes they want to be for Halloween at the start of summer. I've made the rule in my house that if you can imagine it mom will try her very best to make it happen.
When I was little I remember one year wanting to be and ice cream cone. My mom sewed two big scoops and wrapped a cone shape around my

Week 9 {#girlydos100daysofhair}
What a busy week its been. Guess what week it was for me. It was rush to get everything done for Halloween week. And for the first time for as long as I can remember I am ready for Halloween before the day of Halloween! Its a great year for us. Beans has finally given me the okay to share her Halloween costume, so I will post that later. Today she had a party and it was her first time putting

Double Knot Braid
I know there are a lot of readers out there that struggle with braiding. This is one of those styles that you might be able to make work for you if you are not a braider. We originally posted this hairstyle as single knots. We called it Linky Pigtails. Last year we finally did a video tutorial for that hairstyle and at the time I remember wanting to play with the left out hairs and make it look

Week 8 {#Girlydos100daysofhair}
SHORT WEEK!!!! My favorite. We slept in (a bit) this morning. And we are still lounging in our PJ's and its almost 10 am. I love a much needed lazy day. I have spent the morning working on Halloween costumes trying to buy some time before my baby wakes up. He has been waking up the last few mornings needed some one-on-one super snuggle time with his mommy. And that trumps almost any other need

Week 7 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
This week was such a busy week. You got three new posts here on Girly Do's, my son started basketball and its October, so that means in all my down time I am busy sewing Halloween costumes. And guess what?... I LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Life may get busy, but this is totally what I signed up for when I had my first child to when I adopted my fourth.

Tiny Box Braid Tie-Back
This isn't one of the most unique hairstyles I've done in a while, but I really like the fishtail box braid, but I don't love how it is only done in a ponytail right now. So I have set out on a mission to come up with some way for it to be worn and be a little more noticeable that it is amazing all the way around. I think we did pretty good at making it noticeable, but now its so small maybe

Our {Hair Care} Routine: Part 2
Products!!! One of the biggest questions I am ever asked when it comes to our routine is about which products I use (personally). And as a professional which products I recommend. These are the products I have and use myself.
When I pulled out all of my products I thought it looked a bit overwhelming, so instead of writing up a long post about each of them individually I turned the camera on

Week 6 {#GirlyDos100DaysofHair}
We had a really great hair week! The week started out with a bump and I was sure Beans was coming down with something and might be staying at home sick, but it ended up just being a headache. Thankfully. I've told her to make sure she's drinking enough water to help keep the headaches away. (Keep reading to get links to these tutorials.)

Braided Faux-Hawk
You have to love a good tight perfectly placed style that can work on so many levels for so very many different occasions. This one really can be used for everything from dressed up and elegant to every day. How do you see you using this style?
I really love this style also for the fact that it uses a banana clip. I remember having banana clips and not knowing how to us them. I would use them

Week 5 {#girlydos100daysofhair}
I think my phone is experiencing its two-year "slump". We got a letter saying our contract was up and yada-yada-yada we qualify to upgrade... well we thought of getting me a new phone and giving mine to the husband to abuse. (He breaks a phone or two every year.) But its been acting up a bit lately and I feel like its lost a bit of photo quality this week (among other things). Do phones know

Week 4 {#girlydos100daysofhair}
Beans hair is seriously getting so long! We measured it today because she's ready to cut it, but wants to donate... She's still a few months away from donating. I'm thinking that she may be able to donate and go back to a bob at the start of next summer. She is very excited.
This week we had some really cute styles, so I have to ask which is your favorite? I almost think its too hard to pick a

Our {Hair Care} Routine: Part 1
Knowing our hair care routine is one of the most demanded requests we get. As a hairstylist I have a different approach at hair care than most people. At the same time I am sure we use products you wouldn't expect me to be using as a stylist. So the next few posts are all about our routine around here at Girly Do's house with a bit of cosmetologist input to help you work it in to your own

The Big Beautiful Bun Braid
It has been on my list for a while to make this braid a stronger braid that held up better and used less bobby-pins. I think I accomplished this. When I originally learned how to do this hairstyle I wasn't very impressed with the tightness of it and I didn't love how many bobby-pins I had to use to make it look good. I finally have it to where it holds itself and I am only using bobby-pins to

Week 2 {Days 6-9}
What a week. This week started out fine, but ended a bit chaotic. I didn't even get my new video uploaded this week, but some weeks are like that. Hopefully that means next week you will get two new tutorials so I can stay on track. My little Beans got sick this week, so we spent part of our week visiting the hospital. No worries though, she is fine.

Dutch Fish-Bone Braid {Fishtail}
Beans has had a love hate relationship with the look of fish-bone braids for a long time. She loves them because they are a very pretty braid, but she hates how loose they are as a finished look. We of course have the tightest fish-bone braid that doesn't sag like most fish-bone braids, but it was still not tight enough for her. So I was thrilled to learn the dutch version of this braid.

Twisted Bun
If you haven't caught on yet I have been trying to do more bun styles and updo styles over the last few weeks. The biggest reason for this is because its almost back to school time for us and I really like tight styles the first few weeks of school. Its still hot outside, so I like to have her hair out of her way and second it is bug season. If you remember my post from a few weeks back about

Back to School---Non-hair post
Next Monday my five-year old enters Kindergarten. She has a bit longer of a day since she is in a language immersion program. The longer day also means lunches at school. For most kids, this isn't a problem and is super exciting! For us it's a little bit different.
Our sweet Sophie has a peanut/treenut and a venom bite allergy. Eating in the lunchroom and playing on the playground are enough to send her into anaphylaxis. Even though the lunchroom and playground staff, teachers and administration are all trained on how to handle her allergies if such an incident occurs, it's still enough to make my heart beat in my throat until I pick her up from school.
And then there is the friend issue. I am really hoping that she finds a friend whose parents will send to school with a non-nut lunch. I hope they won't be nervous about inviting her to playdates and birthday parties. A mom's worst nightmare is a lonely or targeted child at school.
In an effort to make our family more aware (a well-meaning grandparent tried to give her Cracker Jacks not realizing the top ingredient was peanuts) my husband made this little video.

Double Braid Halo Braid
I am so excited to be sharing this cute hairstyle with you. Beans and I have been having a really fun time with this style and styles like this. I love using a sock or doughnut for making this big beautiful bun. And its been a favorite for a while. It has been on my to do list for some time. Every other tutorial out there doesn't make this a secure style. One thing they miss is anchoring the

One of my favorite braids is this one. We call it a Ladder Braid. Have you seen this tutorial before? Have you tried it? It looks really hard, but it is actually a lot easier than you think it is. We haven't done this is a while, but I am thinking we need to do it again really soon.

Big Flower Bun Updo Style
Back in 2010 I did a hairstyle I called a Flower Bun. This is the exact same style only I didn't do the initial wrap at tight and I made it a little fancier with braids. Since I originally posted the flower bun I have done it a handful of times for updo's for school dances. So I know this is a great one for any special occasion any age.
In the next few weeks we are going to find out which

It was a bit random for Beans to say she wanted to wear her curlers to bed last night, but she pulled out these old gems and we put them to good use. This is one of those easier tutorials that I hesitated to make a tutorial for, but I finally decided I had to do it because it is such a darling style. Unfortunately Beans hair is not long enough to do this the easy way, so you get to benefit from seeing this style for hair that is just too short to do the easy way.
If you have never made a headband out of your own hair I highly recommend it.

If you saw (and read) my post last Wednesday you know that I have a new tutorial for you today that builds on that hairstyle to make a super pretty updo style that is super easy to do. One of the styles I love most is a good quick style that looks A*MAY*ZING! This is one of those styles. So do you remember my post from Monday? This is the style we used to take advantage of those super pretty curls and have a half-up-do!

Celtic Knot
The Celtic Knot is such a pretty knot. There is a photo floating around of someone who uses multiple knots in a very beautiful updo. I know how its done and could totally show you how... but Beans hair isn't long enough. A few of those knots and I have nothing to work with making multiples. But do we use the Celtic Knot? Yes. We tend to use it more over a ponytail like in the video. For Beans

Its funny how you change in how you do a style. I look back at this one and I ADORE IT in every way, but if I were doing it right now I would have done it different than I did in this original tutorial. End of the school year for us meant that Beans got some temporary color in her hair. The color she chose was purple. Now of course she is addicted and says that she wants to have purple hair forever, but she knows its just for the summer. (I hope.)

I have to start out by saying that my little girl usually doesn't smile showing off her teeth, but she loves having braces and every smile for this hairstyle photo shoot she had a big smile on her cute little face. She's still getting used to braces, but she is having a good time while she gets used to them.

Head Lice (Nasty Nits)
Getting lice used to be a shameful dirty thing. Now there are people that have adapted to normalizing head lice as just part of growing up. Making it sound like its a rite-of-passage that all kids must face in adolescence. I can relate to this in regard to teaching children to not "put down" lice victims, but I find no reason to adapt the attitude that it is a common occurrence.

Beans has got your covered!!! She will show your little ones how its done in this video. (And hopefully that helps.)
She seriously makes me laugh. The older she

The Truth About HEAT and Your HAIR
A few weeks back I posted a YouTube video on my Facebook page along with a lot of other people out there. This video has literally gone viral. Some may laugh at it and find it comical others feel for this little girl. I fit into the later of the two extremes. But that isn't what prompted this post.
I read from another hair blogger that said something about the heat and that she should have

St. Patrick Day GREEN POST
The best part about St. Patrick Day is GREEN!!!And what better way to have a little extra green in your life than with making your own green hair accessories. Yesterday I made seven different hair accessories for Beans to choose from for St Patrick Day. Maybe that was a bit excessive! It actually started out as one, but we ended up with seven. No big deal though--- it just means you guys have
My Pretty Little Flower
I was emailed a few weeks back that the original link I had linked to do these flowers I've done a handful of times has gone private. And that you guys can no longer see the tutorial. I'm sorry about that! It started me on this fun bow-making adventure though! I've been making flowers like crazy over the last couple days! Its been so fun!!! But I wanted you to have the tutorial for this one.
Darling Dahlia
The other day... with my knees being up and icing so much... I needed something new to do. And something challenging. So I purchased a new flower pattern from All Things Ribbon. Totally fell in love!! This one was my first attempt and I know a few things I could do better, but I had to share it with you all because it is GREAT for spring. I'm getting so desperate for flowers I'm forcing Beans
Ribbon Covering your Headband
I don't know if there is anyone who doesn't know how to do this, but I wanted to share my own recipe for hair accessory success. This one is great especially right now because Beans has decided she's DONE with bangs (Boooo). And she is ready to grow them out again. Headbands are a lifesaver when you have a little one growing her hair out. We will be making a bunch of these in every color for
Dear Daisy,
This is one of my "go to" hair flowers. If someone needs a quick cute flower for something I usually turn to this one! For one thing its sooooo easy. For another you can do a lot with the petals to make each one very unique. This one I love to play with!!!
You'll have to enlarge the picture to read the step by step. PLEASE let me know if you have any problems viewing this tutorial! Happy
Ribbon and Bobby-Pins
I used to do this one all the time around holidays. Its been a long time since we did this and I figured WHY NOT!!! You can honestly attach so many things to bobby-pins. You can attach ribbon, charms, pearls, little flowers... there are so many options. Have fun with this idea and get some cute things put on your bobby pins.
On this tutorial I think I did my ribbon just a little longer than I
St. Patrick Day {Copy Cat}
You might remember a few months back when we had Jen from All Things Ribbon guest posting for us. Well trying to recreate her flower has been on my "to-do" list since that time. Now that I have been down for a bit with this knee surgery I decided now was as good of a time as any. So I went back to the original tutorial post and followed the step-by-step and came up with this super cute fun
Adding Ribbon to Your Ponytail
One of my favorite holidays to make hair accessories for is ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!! Because you need GREEN anyways and what better way to do it than with fun hair pretties. This is one of the easiest ways we know to make a fun SIMPLE accessory for your hair. It easy is a beginning level project. But if you still struggle with our instructions in any way please don't hesitate to let me know and I

Braided Updo
I am feeling SO GUILTY about not having this one done sooner. I got a few emails from people wanting to use this one and I hope I didn't totally miss the mark on this one. I know one thing for sure... I have it done just in time for PROM!!! So hopefully we can see this one used a lot this Spring for Prom and Easter!
So (for those who want to know) my surgery went... well. They got in there

Bow Braiding
I know others have done a tutorial on this before. However, I have a tiny twist to my tutorial that I think can help a lot of people that are struggling with this style. So I decided to make my own tutorial. This really is a super cute hair style. I hope those that haven't been able to make this one work for them before can use it with the modification we have made.
I also took some pictures

Happy Valentines Day Hairstyle
With Valentines Day is just a few days I knew I had to get this cute heart style up and posted for you all. This is sooooo cute! My only wish is that I wasn't recovering from surgery, because I think this would look amazing modified just a bit with using the ribbon braid to emphasis the heart shape. I really think I will have to try that after surgery. It will be past Valentines Day, but its a

100 Days of School Hairstyles
Today is officially the 100th day of our hair experiment. Yeah, we did it!!! For day 100 I wanted to do something exciting, but I am heading into surgery and the thoughts of her having a style not easy to get out or anything wasn't ideal. So I left it up to her and she just wanted simple braids. So that is exactly what we did. Simple French Braids.
I hope that you got a few things from our

Days 95-99
If it wasn't for that snow day a few weeks back today would be the 100th day of school for us. But instead the 100th day will be falling on my day of surgery. OF COURSE!!! LOL I have a plan though, so don't fret. I will still be able to do something fun for that 100th day. We've been working to hard on this to not do something fun.
Day 95- You know how often we do this one. When we started

WINNERS
Thanks to everyone who entered this fun giveaway. I didn't use random.org. I know its silly, but I swear those who are the first to comment seem to not have as good of a chance at winning. Maybe its just me, but I wanted to try and make it as fair as possible, so I printed up all 200 comments and drew out my three winners. CONGRATULATIONS TO:

GIVEAWAY {TIME IS UP}
For my birthday (last week) I wanted to have a fun little giveaway. This year one of my goals for Girly Do Hairstyles is to do giveaways supplying you with the things you need to RE-CREATE some of my hairstyles. The first one is one of my favorite hairstyles. It was one of the original ones that I think got our site off the ground. I later made a video for this corset hairstyle. And from the

Days 90-94
Its just over one week until my surgery. If I am doing my math right day 100 of this little project we've been working on will be the day I am in surgery. That is pretty hilarious!!! I never would have guessed that would happen.
So this week we had a strange week. Monday night my brother-in-law got married. It was kind of a hard day to pull everything off. I wore the cutest heal/boots to the

Days 87-89
SHORT WEEK!!! It was almost made even more short with another snow day. The weather has been crazy this year. We went from almost no snow last year to an abundance this year! Its been an adventure.
Before we get on to this weeks hair I wanted to let you know that I am trying out the Twitter thing a lot more. Twitter is actually pretty fun! I'm still very new to it, so any tips you can give me

Triple Chevron Style
If you follow fashion at all you know just where you can see this print... EVERYWHERE!!! You see it on patterns for clothing. People use it in nail design. Its literally everywhere right now. I want to find me a cute maxi skirt in navy blue and cream with the Chevron pattern. LOVE IT!!!
So we had to use this in a style. I have had this one on my list for a few weeks after we did it as a

Days 82-86
This was a good week for hair. I was feeling really creative and since I am on "rest" orders from my husband for my bad knees I took a little more time for Beans to have cute hair this week. I love having a little more time for hair!
Day 82- This one is driving me insane! ITS BEAUTIFUL! I LOVE IT. However, I (am certain) was inspired by a pin on Pinterest, but I can't for the life of me find

Days 77-81
Beans said to me this week, "Mom I can't wait until my hair is to here." Pointing at her lowest point on her back. I wonder if she can get it that long!!! She is eager to try. If she's like me when it comes to hair she'll get it long and it will get too hot and she'll chop it off. We will have to see.
This week was a great one for hair. I don't think we had any lazy days. And we had a lot of

Dry Scalp Treatment
One of the most important things you can do for your hair is deep conditioning and scalp treatments! Scalp treatments can be amazing! Especially this time of year. When winter hits my scalp dries out big time.
For this you will need a few tools. I used a cholesterol cream, but you could use coconut oil as well. I've done it both ways. I like it both ways. However, when I used the coconut

Messy Bun Faux-Hawk
Another one marked off my "to do" list. This makes me so happy. I am really going after it hard right now. For two reasons. First I am going to have a knee surgery in the first part of February and I am not sure how up to doing hair I am going to feel. So I figured I had better get ahead of myself. I don't exactly know what to expect. Number two, while I am down and recovering I am going to

Day 74-76
Short week! I don't know about you, but I hated sending my little ones back to school this week. I ENJOY very much any break they get from school. A break from doing homework. A break from school in general, but mostly for some much needed mom and me time. I LOVE my time with my kids. And no matter how long it is (even summer vacation) there was always more I wanted to do with them. There just
